- Mobilize support from multiple sectors for improving nutrition outcomes, such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and sanitation.
- Strengthen existing government programs and schemes related to nutrition and ensure last-mile delivery.
Summary:
As part of the Rastriya Poshan Maah initiative, a seminar was conducted by NSS Committee to address two critical topics: Anaemia and the role of millets in improving nutrition. The seminar was led by a speaker, Ms. Vijaya Laxshmi a renowned nutritionist and public health expert, who shared valuable insights into the relationship between anaemia, nutritional deficiencies, and the potential of millets to combat malnutrition. The seminar was aimed at raising awareness among the community about the importance of nutrition in preventing anaemia and promoting the use of millets as a sustainable dietary solution.
Key Points Covered:
- Anaemia: Causes, Effects, and Prevention
- Prevalence of Anaemia: The speaker began by explaining that anaemia is a major public health concern in India, particularly among women and children. According to national health surveys, a significant portion of the population suffers from iron deficiency anaemia, which affects physical and cognitive development.
- Causes: Anaemia is primarily caused by insufficient iron intake, poor absorption of iron, chronic diseases, and parasitic infections. The speaker emphasized the importance of understanding the underlying causes to effectively address the condition.
- Effects: The consequences of anaemia include fatigue, weakness, impaired cognitive and physical development in children, and complications during pregnancy. The speaker stressed the importance of early detection and treatment of anaemia, especially among vulnerable groups.
- Prevention and Treatment: The seminar provided practical guidance on preventing anaemia through dietary changes, including increased consumption of iron-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, lentils, and fortified grains. The speaker also emphasized the importance of vitamin C-rich foods to enhance iron absorption and recommended regular iron supplementation for women and children at risk.
- Millets: A Nutritional Powerhouse
- Nutritional Benefits of Millets: The speaker highlighted the nutritional profile of millets, explaining that they are rich in iron, calcium, fibre, and essential micronutrients. Millets such as ragi (finger millet), bajra (pearl millet), and jowar (sorghum) are excellent sources of iron, making them a key food for preventing and managing anaemia.
- Health Benefits: Millets are gluten-free, have a low glycaemic index, and are packed with antioxidants. They help regulate blood sugar levels, improve digestion, and support overall health. The speaker underscored the importance of including millets in the diet to enhance nutritional intake, particularly for those at risk of anaemia.
- Sustainability of Millets: Millets are not only nutritious but also environmentally sustainable. They require fewer resources to grow and are drought-resistant, making them a suitable crop for regions with water scarcity. The speaker encouraged participants to adopt millets as a staple food, both for their health benefits and their positive impact on food security.
- Linking Anaemia and Millets
- The speaker made a strong case for incorporating millets into daily diets as a natural solution to anaemia. By replacing or supplementing common cereals like rice and wheat with millets, families can improve their iron intake and overall nutritional status. Millets, being rich in iron, can help reduce the prevalence of anaemia when combined with other iron-rich foods and supplements.
